McILVAINE OR THE SOCIETY---"AN OFFENCE OF A PUBLIC CHARACTER HAD BEEN GIVEN BY TWO MEMBERS COL. CHERRY AND HIS WIFE WHO HAD REPORTED THAT MY SON IN LAW WILLIAM KNAGGS HAD STOLEN A QUANTITY OF LUMBER FROM HIM. I ENDEAVOURED TO HAVE THE COL. COME TO AN EXPLANATION AND PUBLICALLY CONTRADICT THE REPORT - THIS HE DECLINED DOING - HIS CIRCUMSTANCES FORBADE THE IDEA OF A PROSECUTION IN A COURT OF JUSTICE AND AS THERE WAS NO ECCLIASTICAL COURT BEFORE WHOM THE CASE COULD BE TRIED, COL. ANDERSON AND HIS WIFE, MRS. CLARK, MYSELF AND THREE DAUGHTERS FELT OURSELVES COMPELLED TO KEEP BACK FROM THE LORD'S TABLE"---"DR. ADAMS HAS JOINED THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH ... SHE [MRS. ADAMS] STILL PROFESSES TO BELONG TO US - BUT SHE IS A WEAK WOMAN AND HAS MUCH TO DISCOURAGE HER"---THE METHODISTS APPOINTED MR.
