WE STARTED FOUR FAIRPORT ABOUT NOON ON THE "GREAT WESTERN" SHE WAS VERY HEAVELY LADEN BUT WE ARRIVED SAFELY AT DETROIT THE NEXT MORNING AT EIGHT O'CLOCK WE STAID IN THE CITY ALL DAY BUT THE HEAT WAS SUCH I DID NOT VENTURE OUT TILL AFTERNOON WHEN I WENT WITH COUSIN TO SEE A FRIEND OF HIS A YOUNG LADY WHO CAME FROM COMSTOCK TO RESIDE WITH A SISTER IN THE CITY. I STAID WITH HER THAT NIGHT, AND THE NEXT MORNING WE WENT ON TO THE CARS [RAILROAD CARS] AT EIGHT, THE TRAVELING IS VERY PRETTY BUT IT'S EVEN WORSE THAN DUSTY ROADS FOR DIRT WE REACHED MARSHALL AT HALF PAST THREE HAVING TRAVELED ONE HUNDRED AND TEN MILES. THERE UNCLE PERCIVAL MET US AND WE CAME NINE MILES FURTHER BEFORE STOPPING FOR THE NIGHT, IN A LUMBER WAGGON TOO.
