1843-05-17 SAGINAW MICH--SAGINAW CO--BLACK 30MM CDS & LARGE STAMPED 5 RATE----TO E.O. CLEMANS, CLEVELAND, OHIO---FROM HIS BROTHER THOMAS J. CLEMANS----DATELINED UPPER SAGINAW---"WE DID NOT ARRIVE AT LOWER SAGINAW UNTIL THE SECOND WEDNESDAY AFTER LEAVING CLEVELAND, BEING MUCH HINDERED BY ADVERSE WINDS. WE LEFT THE PIERS OF CLEVELAND FRIDAY MORNING AND HAD A FIERCE RAIN TILL SATURDAY NIGHT WHERE WE FOUND OURSELVES OVER THE SAINT CLAIR FLATS AND IN THE MOUTH OF ST. OR SAINCLAIR(SIC) RIVER WHEN WE REMAINED OVER THE SABBATH. WE CONTINUED TO PROGRESS USING ALL THE FAVORABLE WIND WE HAD UNTIL WE CAME IN SIGHT OF POINT AUX BARGUS AT THE ENTRANCE OF SAGINAW BAY WHEN WE WERE MET WITH AN ADVERSE WIND, AND AFTER LANGERING(SIC) ON IN HOPES OF WEATHERING THE POINT FOR A PERIOD OF 36 HOURS WE RETURNED TO THE SAINT CLAIR RIVER ON SATURDAY AND ANCHORING THERE REMAINED OVER THE SABBATH THUS SPENDING TWO SABBATHS ON THAT SHORT RIVER, ONE AT ITS HEAD, THE OTHER AT ITS MOUTH. LET ME GIVE YOU A DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTRY. THE LAND AT THE MOUTH OF SAGINAW RIVER IS EXTREMELY LOW AND MARSHY, AT THE LOWER VILLAGE 2 1/2 OR 3 MILES FROM THE MOUTH THE LAND RISES SOME 6 TO 10 FEET MAKING AN ELIGIBLE SITE FOR BUILDING IMMEDIATELY ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER. THE LAND ON THE EAST SIDE BECOMES WET AND MARSHY ON LEAVING THE RIVER THO I AM TOLD IT IS NOT SO ON THE WEST SIDE. FROM LOWER TO UPPER SAGINAW A DISTANCE OF 16 MILES IT IS ALMOST WITHOUT EXCEPTION ONE CONTINUED MARSH OR WET PRAIRIE ELEVATED ONLY A FEW INCHES ABOVE THE RIVER. AT THIS PLACE THE LAND IS HIGH & DRY, AND IT IS COMPARATIVELY A FINE LOCATION. THE SOIL I SHOULD THINK WAS EXCEEDINGLY FERTILE. I WAS SOMEWHAT SURPRISED TO LEARN FROM MY HOST THAT PEACHES IN ABUNDANCE COULD BE RAISED HERE AT LEAST PEACHES HAD BEEN RAISED FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS BUT THE BUDS WERE DESTROYED THIS SEASON BY THE SEVERITY OF THE PAST WINTER."---AG/ECON----WATERWAYS---WEATHER----GENEALOGY---3pg-----COURTESY OF BILL BROOKS
